The houseboats of today have evolved from the traditional kettuvallams - native rice barges. The hull is carved from Anjili Wood adequately treated in the traditional methods to make it water resistant. The arched roof / canopy - "Valavara", is made from bamboo, split stem of Arcanut tree and bound with natural Coir. The flooring is of wood and marinated plywood.
